How to use the Ensoniq ASR-10 Sampler: Meet the ASR
Here's a comprehensive introduction and primer 'crash course' on how to use the legendary Ensoniq ASR-10 Sampler from 1992. Arguably the most formidable 'Hit-Making' Work-Station of the '90s. Famously used by Wu-Tang Clan, Timbaland among others, still to this day!

OS v3 - 3.52: A little bit more bloated, but full featured. I've heard rumours that the Sync latency is a little more laggy, but I haven't yet verified this claim.
OS v2: Quite a popular OS, as it's the edition most of the 'bells & whistles' were introduced into, such as Hard Disk Recording & 44.1kHz effects.
OS v1.50: Quick, responsive, but without the bells and whistles. No Hard Disk recording & No 44.1kHz Effects.

    Hi, thanks for all your videos, they are a great resource and I learn new things with various hardware I have throughout your channel. Out of curiosity what is the purpose of this as opposed to something like making a midi channel in the mpc and just triggering the sounds from the external device almost like a sound module? Running its audio outs into a interface or something and tracking them both in real time. Is it just the clock is shifting or something? Also is the sequence for the roland recorded separately here or the data is being played from the mpc in real time, im assuming this is more so like a transport control thing where you actually recorded a sequence on the secondary device and you want them to "play" both machines simultaneously. As a secondary question what would be the advantage of something like this versus just using the externals like a rack unit and having all the data in the main device? I currently have 2 external machines hooked to my modern mpc and I use the modern one mainly as the brain to sequence everything else but trigger them in real time, would be curious if that is still the most efficient way of doing things or if there would be things to gain not using midi tracks in modern mpc and just triggering the sound banks in real time. Specifically an asr 10 and a 2kxl running into the live 2. Thanks in advance.

      Q1: "What is the purpose of this.." A1: These retro-Roland devices are not MIDI, they are DIN Sync, only Clock pulse information is utilised. So, you don't have a lot of choice.. you can't 'trigger' their internal sounds.. unless, of course, you get these machines physically modified and retrofitted with custom MIDI interfaces. 👍🏼

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 4 дні тому

      Q2: "Is the Sequence for the Roland recorded separately..." A2: If you consider Q1, then 'Yes', you can't 'trigger' their Sounds from the MPC. They have their own Sequencer which you can Sync up to a MIDI device using something like that Korg KMS-30. 👍🏼

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 4 дні тому

      Q3: "What would be the advantage of something like this.." A3: I'm not sure there is an advantage.. but, rather, a 'means' in which you can achieve communication at all. 👍🏼

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 4 дні тому

      Q4: "Curious if that is still the most efficient way of doing things.." A4: It's probably more a case of 'Whatever gets you through the night'.. you could Sample each sound, that you're triggering, and have it all 'internal' on your MPC. That might be 'effective' if you don't have much desk space, a small room, not enough inputs on your interface / mixer, etc. 👍🏼

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 4 дні тому

      Q5: "An asr 10 and a 2kxl running into the live 2.." A6: Well, each Sequencer has it's own unique 'work flow'. So, when you sit at your ASR, and create something.. you're, unconsciously, working differently to how you would if you used the Sequencer on the MPC. How 'different' ?! ... well, who knows really.. but, you will make different decisions based on the functions that are at your disposal. You might prefer to Sequence the ASR from the 2000XL, in which case, you're adhering to a completely different physical interface with a completely different set of options. For example, the 2000XL has 'percentage' Swing, whereas, the ASR.. does not. So, I guess, you could say it's "Horses for courses" 🙏🏻

    I might be just as confused about the ASR-10 after learning all about it hahaha Is it just me (maybe due to coming up on Akai S2000, MPC2000 etc), but also did Ensoniq just do stuff in pretty weird ways?

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 6 днів тому

      It's quite a monster.. but then, coming from an MPC.. which is more based around 16 sounds per 'Bank', the ASR-88.. for example.. is kinda more like an MPC4000.. but with 88 keys, instead of 16x4 Pads!.. or 61 (but the OS caters to 88 keys!). So, yeah.. stark differences.. and then the ASR has more of an emphasis on Keyboard patches and 'synthesis', rather than the MPC being slightly more 'affiliated' with Percussion, I guess one could say.. given the 'lack there of' physical keys 👍🏼

    Very nice Deceptively simple but there are some hidden tips and tricks that make this a unique synth. I’d never sell mine now (mines a 1985 built model :) It can sound hard and bright but also soft and warm if you know how to do it. The negative envelope is lots of fun…

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab 13 днів тому

      Yep, by default the SP1200 will 'listen' to MIDI Channel #1. So, make sure your MPC Track is set to the same. Then, you'll need to 'trigger' the SP's 'Pads', via a specific set of 'notes' (that the Pads 'listen' for). • @APMTenants
    @APMTenants 15 днів тому

    Didn’t really hear big difference until you went to the 909 beat. Hearing way less high end detail on the sp1200 in that clip. Obviously, the sample rate of the 1200 is just too low to reproduce frequencies above 13k. And if the DBs are peaked on both machines, that is going to leave more room for bass frequencies on the 1200. Low pass on the MPC at 13k BEFORE the converter, and I doubt there would be much difference at all

    They're both very similar in sound. To my ear, the attack of transients seem a bit more pronounced and I also have a feeling that there's a little bit of either a bump or a high shelf in the higher frequencies on the 2000XL. Both machines are marvelous, I'm an owner of the 2000XL and have never owned a 3000. Very cool video!

  • @lundsweden
    @lundsweden Місяць тому

    I owned a Juno 106 for many years, wish I still had it! Its a bit of a limited synth in many ways, but that made it easy to learn synthesis on. It may of only had one oscillator, but with the sub bass on (always an octave down) it's almost as if you have two (plus you can have square/pulse and saw on at the same time, but no control over them individually). Honestly the synth doesn't sound that good without chorus, thankfully it's such a great chorus though. The sub bass always sounds like distorted, is part of the sound of the synth but not always something I wanted. For example using a proper 2 DCO synth, you can pitch the square down one octave to get a similar sound to the Juno sub... but it sounds different (IMO better).

    Hello, Thank you so much for the tutorial! I have a question about sync : When I sync my Mpc as slave to other device Keystep pro or Ableton... I have always some not from the Mpc that are triggered randomly ! It look like the midi channel of the mpc is interfering with other channels. Can you please explain how you can avoid this. Thank youuuu

    • @tonelab
      @tonelab Місяць тому

      I'm not so sure it would be fair to say 'interfering', the MPC was designed very specifically to receive notes over MIDI. So, I'd probably assume the MPC is 'catching' notes coming from your Keystep etc. What you should be doing is make sure the Keystep isn't firing Notes, via the same MIDI channels that your MPC is expected to receive on.. or configure your MPC to 'ignore' MIDI channels that aren't required. So, if you haven't already done so.. try this chapter on the 2000XL regarding MIDI input options. If you follow this, you should be able to get your XL to 'ignore' what ever comes from external gear. Having said that... 'prevention is better than cure', meaning... it's best to stop unwanted MIDI traffic from the source 👍🏼 🙇🏻‍♂️ ua-cam.com/video/hdPl70BWjpg/v-deo.html

    My whole career as a producer started with this machine back in 93. I used to love it and thought about getting it again as a collectors item, then I saw it going for like $1500. It was about $1800 back then. There's NO WAY that I would pay more than $300 for this as it is incredibly antiquated for use in today's world. To each their own though.

    This was a very good tutorial! Thanks for doing it. I'm an old musician from Finland and I've been using synthesizers for a long time. I've seen many synth videos and this was actually one of the best I've ever seen. I wish these videos would've been available when I started. There's just a couple of things I'd like to point out. This might be helpful to your viewers: 10:37 - The wave selection made at this point was a triangular wave (triangle) and not a sawtooth wave (saw). I've seen many great people making these small mistakes by accident. So, not a big deal but I just liked to point that out. It might've confused some people. 15:21 - The envelope always modulates only the filter's cutoff frequency (and not the emphasis/resonance at all). The cutoff frequency is always the default if you can use an envelope to modulate the filter. Any option to modulate the resonance is extremely rare especially on vintage synthesizers. The emphasis/resonance adds a peak to the frequency, which has been currently set by the cutoff frequency knob. So, adding some emphasis/resonance makes the changes of the filter's cutoff frequency much more expressive. Modulating the filter with an envelope is one of the best ways to make a sound more alive. When you set the envelope controls a certain way the synth can even respond to your playing style. (So, when you play faster, then all the Attack, Decay, Sustain & Release stages of the envelope won't always have time to fully trigger yet.) You can achieve something that's a tiny bit closer to having a modern velocity sensitive (touch sensitive) keyboard. It's also quite common that the emphasis/resonance goes to such extreme levels that it produces its own audible sine wave. Turn all the oscillators off and try using the full 100% keyboard filter tracking. Then you could play perfect notes using only the filter. Anyway, I just needed to add a few things. Maybe there were a couple of interesting tidbits as well. Nothing is perfect but this video got very close. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.

      There's a bit more about the SP in this clip, regarding the Rossum - which shares about 98% of the same O.S. ua-cam.com/video/fJllMiVqL3U/v-deo.html And, 'yes', well... sorta.. I've already started the ASR tutorial, which again, shares quite a lot of functionality with the EPS. Try this here 👍🏼 ua-cam.com/video/hZ8VPWOY7tc/v-deo.html

    And just when i thought i was getting the hang of this synth (IOS) version i come across this video, and how glad i am that i did. I had this app for a few years and finally decided since i paid for it i should make use of it. I've watched plenty of videos on this synth and i must say this was the first to explain the orange rocker switches in a manner in which i understand. You can read something all day but not until it's demonstrated are you really able to get a good understanding of how it works and this did it for me. Also i love Oberheim X's and O's and the Prophet 5 but it seems to me the minimoog can imitate those synths more than they are able to mimic the minimoog. imo.

    These JUNO series and the SH-101 video was fantastic. Thank you for doing these. I unfortunately don't have the real thing, but this really helps to understand the virtual and clone versions. BTW, requesting a Korg MS-20. Pretty please. :)
